We’re delighted to welcome Dr John Ashcroft as the new President of the British Society for Haematology. John brings extensive clinical, leadership and advocacy experience, and a long‑standing commitment to strengthening the specialty.

Alongside a filmed discussion between John and our outgoing President Dr Sue Pavord, we’re pleased to share a message from our new President, reflecting on his involvement with BSH and his vision for the role ahead. We encourage all members to take a moment to read his thoughts and get to know him as he begins this new chapter with the Society

Dr John Ashcroft's statement:

Two years ago, when I stood for election, I laid out my experience and aims for BSH. Much has changed in the world since 2023 but so many challenges remain the same for haematology.

I believe that having experience across research, being a consultant in both a District General Hospital and in tertiary care, in the clinic and in the lab, I have first-hand knowledge of how those challenges are manifesting themselves.

I witness what we are all facing daily - all set within the wider national and international context affecting us. I have been a member of the BSH for over 30 years and have contributed in a number of volunteer roles – most recently as treasurer and vice president. I am passionate about working with you all to help transform the Society’s support for, and value to, our members.

My links to RCPath and RCP over recent years have put me in a strong position to build on our relationships with the Colleges and work with them to overcome some of the challenges we face – particularly with haematology exams. I am also keen to shine a light on opportunities for innovation across our field whether that be through links to NIHR or strong ethically framed partnerships with industry.

The BSH belongs to us all and, as President, I will continue to work alongside both the BSH team and our membership to increase the Society’s advocacy role and visibility at a national level. If there are issues you are facing let us know and the team can work with you to see how we can work towards amplifying your voices.

BSH is evolving within a rapidly changing world and I am honoured to help lead the BSH as it continues to grow as the go‑to place for all things haematology.
